This week we would like to bring you some Armenian history. Touching the walls of #Smbataberd means touching the history itself.
Smbatabert in Vayots Dzor province is one of the most significant fortresses of Armenia. It is estimated to have been built in the 5th century, but later, during the 9th -10th centuries, it was fully renovated and fortified.

Because of its advantageous position, Smbataberd was practically impossible to capture by a direct attack. The fortress is based directly on a ridge and guarded by steep cliffs from 3 sides. According to some sources, though, Seljuq Turks managed to capture Smbataberd around the 11th century. A local legend suggests that the attackers implemented a trick to capture it - a thirsty horse was brought to stiff the water pipe of the fortress and guide the invaders to it. Once discovered, the pipe was cut off to deprive the defenders of water supply and make them give in. However, there is evidence suggesting that our forefathers defended the fortress until the 13th century.

Smbataberd is one of the most impressive architectural monuments that remain standing in Armenia to tell the world about the creative and constructive mind of our nation and about Armenia’s long and winding history.
